The Principle of Invitation and Inspiration

Sometimes, if we’re lucky, the flow of a conversation seems to happen on its own.

Not to worry! Just because that flow and connection doesn’t happen automatically, it doesn’t mean it can’t happen or that it’s impossible to have a really enjoyable conversation with someone.

• An invitation is saying something that explicitly lets your partner know it is their turn to speak.

• An inspiration is saying something that makes your partner want to speak without you prompting them.

Juicy conversations tend to have both of the above in abundance, but if you find yourself in a flagging conversation, you can inject one or both to get things flowing again.

With a little practice, you’ll find that invitation and inspiration will help you start fun, easy conversations with just about everyone you meet.
